New Coloring Book

A RETIREE'S LAST TRIP TO COSTCO

Yesterday I was at Costco buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Necco, the Wonder Dog, which weighs 191 lbs. I was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had an elephant?

So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I enjoyed a couple of days fishing up there in the mountains. At night I breathed the smell of the tent and surrounding pines deep into my chest and let them tickle my memories from days long ago. I drove up to the Adirondacks for a weekend a few times each summer with my old college buddy, Marty. We were happy to have just the basics of life on those trips … hot dogs and hamburgs, my soft drinks, his martinis, my potato chips, his Twinkies. The latter had been around since we were kids.

Does the daffodil say...

Does the daffodil say...
It’s been a cold mean winter,
I think I’ll just stay here
Hidden down below.
No! A force greater than
The sleet and snow;
The bitter cold of night and
The wintry blasts of air;
Gives the bulb strength
And wonderful things
Happen there -.unseen by us...
Even while the winds blow
And the air is still cold,
The daffodil pushes the earth
Aside and sends forth its
Green shoots as the cold sun
Shines and the late snows fall at night.

In the morning a few more
Inches of the green stems appear.
The promise of the flower is seen.
She is not discouraged with
Another year beginning.
Her buds are formed and
Soon the air will be warm and the
Sun, bright. The daffodil will express
What she is here to express -
Without fanfare or applause.
She will be beautiful.
She will just stand there, tall
Without wavering or asking
For anything... but just to be.

What can we lean from the daffodil?
Shall we be discouraged with
Another year? Should we decide
It isn’t worth it, to start another day?
No! It’s time to rise and shine forth
like the daffodil.
Express the grace, beauty and
The love of life.... to all mankind.
Drop the cold mean winter and
Bask in the warm sunshine of the
Day. Remember there are others
Looking on... waiting for your light
To shine.
